About Jake and his priorities
People are doing it tough. Many Australians feel that no matter who they vote for, things won't change. They see politicians prioritise donors, lobbyists, powerful corporations and political parties instead of serving the communities they were elected to represent.
This frustration—and the encouragement of our community—has led me to stand as an Independent candidate for Hindmarsh in the upcoming Federal Election.
Hindmarsh is my home, and it will always come first. I was born here, went to Grange Schools and Seaton High School and had my first job at McDonald’s Fulham Gardens. In the western suburbs, we know each other or can always find a connection, whether through a sports club, a favourite cafe or passing each other while running along the coastline! It’s the people who matter in my community, and they deserve better.
We need people to stand for parliament who want to be community champions, who stand in your corner. People who understand the daily struggles, who fight for real solutions, and who act with truth, courage, and accountability.
Australians are tired of the blame games, inaction, and political decisions that serve vested interests over the public good. It’s time to bring integrity and accountability back to politics.
A Community Vision
I ask people "What kind of community do you want to live in?" and the answer is clear:
-
A community where you can afford to live where you work
-
A healthy community
-
A community with opportunities for today and for future generations
-
A community that looks after each other
-
A socially cohesive community
However many feel that these priorities are slipping away.
My Commitment to Hindmarsh
As an Independent, I will fight for:
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
-
Build more public housing instead of creating a 5 year investment fund. High-quality, affordable public housing should be part of the housing market, just as it was when I was growing up.
-
Reform property taxes to improve housing affordability.
-
Encourage landlords to invest in energy-efficient upgrades (e.g., solar and batteries) to reduce living costs for renters.
COST OF LIVING RELIEF
-
Establish a national gas reservation to lower energy costs during the transition to a renewed energy grid.
-
Support divestiture laws to break up duopolies and improve competition—not just in supermarkets, but across uncompetitive industries.
-
Address skyrocketing insurance premiums to ensure households aren’t left exposed to unacceptable financial risks.
-
Raise welfare payments above the poverty line—because help should lift people up, not drag them further down.
-
Work with universities to ensure students can "earn and learn" during mandatory prac placements to gain experience and income.
HEALTHCARE THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE
-
Increase Medicare rebates to restore universal bulk billing and make primary healthcare accessible to all.
-
Support early intervention for chronic mental illness, rather than leaving police and ambulance services to manage crises.
-
Restore the 20 Medicare-subsidised mental health sessions cut by the government
-
Prioritise GP training to address the looming GP shortage.
AUKUS & SHIPBUILDING
-
Ensure nuclear waste is not stored or disposed of on the Le Fevre Peninsula.
-
Demand a full review of AUKUS—$368 billion is an extraordinary cost, and we deserve transparency on what it delivers for Australia’s security.
-
Stop the $4 billion gift to US shipyards without guarantees for our money.
-
Ensure shipbuilding programs create local jobs and economic benefits, with clear local content requirements—unlike the AUKUS deal, which lacks the 60% local content mechanism of the previous Attack-class program.
FAIRER TAXATION – EVERYONE PAYS THEIR FAIR SHARE
-
Small businesses pay tax. Workers pay tax. Big corporations should too.
A third of large corporations pay zero tax—closing royalty loopholes and stopping multinational tax avoidance could return billions to Australian taxpayers. -
Fight to increase the tax-free threshold to $25,000, ensuring low-income earners take home more of their pay - the Gillard government increased this to $18,200 over a decade ago and it should have been indexed.
Why I’m Running as an Independent
I’ve been part of a major party. I understand why some people find their political home within these structures, and I respect that.
But I have also lived the rigidity within the two party system and witnessed the challenges these structures bring to the community. Independents can help refocus the big players and stop communities from being taken for granted. It comes from standing up for what’s right, pushing for practical solutions, and putting people first.
This campaign is about delivering what our community wants and needs, not serving a party or its political masters.
“It’s clear that independents have made a difference in policy focus and outcomes for their communities. Hindmarsh deserves a representative who listens, who acts, and who fights for them. As an independent, I can do that over having to “sell” a party position.” – Jake Hall-Evans
